John Sutcliffe trained as an undergraduate in Edinburgh, gaining the year prize for systematic surgery and qualifying in 1983. His early medical post-graduate training was also in Edinburgh, after qualification, taking in a large number of specialties including plastic, orthopaedic and paediatric surgery before focusing on neurosurgery.
He undertook Neurosurgical training posts in Sheffield and London and developed an extensive experience of treating spinal conditions ranging from tumours and trauma to the commoner degenerative spinal conditions. He was appointed as a consultant neurosurgeon in 1993 and since that time has concentrated exclusively in the management of patients with spinal disorders.
He developed the concept of the multi-disciplinary team approach to spinal disorders, setting up the London Spine Clinic in 1997 and resigned from the NHS in 2000. He remains an Emeritus Consultant at Barts' and the London NHS Trust. The London Spine Clinic was the first unit of its kind in the UK and continues with the same philosophy today.
Mr Sutcliffe has trained many young spinal surgeons, as training director in his NHS career and as supervisor for the spinal fellowship at the London Spine Clinic and London Clinic Hospital. He runs a regular teaching and training program within the Clinic, in both surgical and non-surgical aspects of spine care.
Mr Sutcliffe no longer undertakes open surgical procedures, but will focus on triaging the patients, arranging the multi-disciplinary management of their symptoms and running the London Spine Clinic as efficiently as possible.

Erlick Pereira is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in London, where his particular interests are complex spinal surgery and functional neurosurgery for movement disorders and chronic pain.
After a psychology degree at Cambridge University, he studied medicine at Oxford University. He then trained in neurosurgery for a decade at Oxford with fellowships in deep brain stimulation and pain neuromodulation, before a one year orthopaedic complex spinal surgery fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, making him dual trained in neurosurgery and orthopaedic spinal surgery.
He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Porto and has been Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and awarded prizes for excellence from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and US Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
He has special interests in complex spinal surgery from slipped discs to trauma, tumour and minimally invasive surgery, fusion surgeries, disc replacement, all surgeries for severe chronic and cancer pain, neuromodulation, spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion stimulation for pain, deep brain stimulation, spinal cord injury surgeries and general brain surgery including Chiari malformations, benign lesions and hydrocephalus.
Mr Pereira is an active academic and the Reader in Neurosurgery at St George’s, University in London. He has published over 150 scientific papers, many book chapters including Gray’s anatomy and three books. He is an accomplished educator in charge of neurosurgical training at St George’s, having sat on the UK neurosurgical advisory committee and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He enjoys cycling, good pubs and restaurants and classic cars, all in moderation.

Mr Panos Liantis is Consultant Spinal and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas' Hospital. He is UK fellowship trained in spinal surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery UCL.
Mr. Liantis has special interest in Complex Spinal Surgery and receives a large number of tertiary and quaternary referrals for primary and revisional problems. He has experience in minimal access techniques in Spinal Surgery and in the management of adult and paediatric spinal deformities, scoliosis, kyphosis, tumours, spinal trauma, osteoporotic fractures, vertebroplasty, infections, lumbar and cervical disc degeneration, sciatica, injection therapies for low back and leg pain.
Mr. Liantis has a PhD in Orthopaedics and Bachelor in Educational Studies. He has also been interested in research and has published in peer reviewed orthopaedic and spinal journals. He is the lead clinician of the fellowship program of the complex spinal surgery at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital and is involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical student and postgraduate clinical doctors at King’s College.
He is a member of the British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS), AO Spine Foundation, The North American Spine Society (NASS) and Spinal Research Group at GSTT.
He speaks English, German and Greek.

Mr Patrick McKenna

Patrick McKenna was a fellowship-trained Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. He qualified from Guy's Hospital in 1993 and rotated through hospitals in London during his Basic Surgical Training.
He completed his Specialist Registrar training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Wessex Rotation from 1999 to 2005. As part of that training, he spent a year at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham as a Spinal Fellow. He is fully trained in all aspects of Spinal Surgery including cervical and lumbar degenerative conditions, tumour, trauma and scoliosis.
He was awarded the Spine Society of Europe Clinical Award in 2005, which is an international prize for clinical research. This was awarded for research into lumbar spinal fusion for low back pain.

After graduating in Germany in 1995 Michael Hess trained in trauma surgery in St. Moritz, Switzerland and at the Spine Center at Orthopaedische Klinik Muenchen-Harlaching. He completed a fellowship in spine surgery and interventional radiology at the University Hospital in Quebec City, Canada and was appointed Lead of the Back Pain Center at Orthopaedische Klinik Muenchen-Harlaching.
In 2016 Michael Hess founded InsightSpine, which is providing a comprehensive spinal disc pain service mainly in Munich, London (with Dr. Anthony Hammond) and Lisbon (with Dr. Armando Barbosa).
For more than 15 years his main interest is in endoscopic procedures, where he has a broad experience in several techniques and approaches. Mr Hess was co-surgeon of the worldwide first successful full-endoscopic nucleus replacement surgery in 2009 and is the principal clinical investigator for a novel nucleus implant.
Mr. Hess has a PhD in Orthopaedics. He is the Past President of the German Interventional Spine Society (GIW e.V.) and serves as Master Instructor for Spine Intervention Society (SIS) in the US and Europe since 2003.
Mr Hess is an internationally renowned expert in the field of minimal-invasive spine surgery and interventional pain therapy. He is lecturer of more than 200 scientific presentations and is invited worldwide as a guest surgeon.
